How many horses do polo players use will depend on the intensity of the game and professionalism of the polo players. Polo players need at least two ponies for every match. This allows horses to rest during the game. But when it comes to high-goal competitions, it is not unusual for a player to have as many as eight horses, one for each chukker. Changing ponies during the game ensures they are rested and full of energy to perform perfectly.
Polo ponies are chosen among the highest quality horse breeds for their speed, strength and maneuverability. They also need to be good-tempered and responsive to riders in high-stress situations. Every horse needs to respond quickly to its rider’s moves, as if they both were a single entity.
