The modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India). In 1862 the Calcutta Polo Club was established by two British soldiers, Captain Robert Stewart and Joe Sherer, who were inspired by the game in Manipur.
It is located in the center of the city’s racecourse, and has wonderful views of the Victoria Memorial and the Vidyasagar Setu.
Some of the most famous polo tournaments have been held here, such as the Ezra Cup world championship, the first and oldest, and the Carmichael Cup and Stewart Cup tournaments.[:]
