The growth of an Argentine polo horse is approximately 8 years, which can be more or less, depending on the horse’s own abilities. There are three stages that polo horses go through before reaching the field:

  • First Stage of Hechura:
After receiving a tame horse, approximately 3 years old, the first thing to do is to get to know the horse and perform trots to exercise it. Looking for the horse’s balance, the habit of the bridle and the turning movements, forward and backward. It lasts approximately 1 year.
  • Second Stage of Hechura:
After 6 months of rest, the horse is taken to the field to begin to get used to the presence of other horses, riders and Polo equipment, with short movements and soft intensity, which is gradually increased. It lasts approximately 2 years.
  • Third Stage of Hechura:
In this stage the horse already plays Polo Argentino, and the demands on the horse are greater. It is trained more, fed more, and its physical and skill growth is notorious.

The most important thing for us at La Carona Polo Club in the training of Argentine Polo horses is patience, not to rush the learning process, and to observe and listen carefully to what the horse communicates, in order to achieve a good connection and optimal growth.[:]
