Arena Polo, The Fast Version of Polo

[:es]The Arena polo is a fast version of polo that is played outdoors on a closed surface for all weather or in an indoor arena.

Unlike the outdoor polo, which is played on a 10-acre field, the sand polo is played on a 300-by-150-foot field, enclosed by walls four or more feet high. The normal game consists of four chukkas, or periods, of seven and a half minutes each. A polo ball is similar to a mini soccer ball, larger than the hard plastic ball used outdoors. The sand game is played on a ground surface with the ball bouncing on the irregular surface and out of the sand wall.

The Arena polo is usually much more financially accessible than the outdoor polo. Club membership fees are generally lower in comparison, in large part because an arena does not have the high annual maintenance cost of a grass field. The investment of the players is usually smaller because, at a minimum, only two horses are needed to play a regulation game of sand polo. Instead of a dedicated truck and a large trailer, a bumper trailer and an SUV are usually enough to transport the sand polo player’s horses.

Sand polo can be played throughout the year, which is attractive to many players because it makes progress in the sport easier and faster. The most popular season for sand polo is winter.[:en]The Arena polo is a fast version of polo that is played outdoors on a closed surface for all weather or in an indoor arena.
